Well, yesterday began week 4 of Lilla Rogers’ Make Art That Sells – My Arty Book Pitch online course. So far she’s covered lots of great information and given really useful tips about everything from how to choose your book’s subject to creating sample spreads that showcase your art style.
The class is really big and there are SO MANY gorgeous illustrations and talented writers in there with me. It’s inspiring and more than a little intimidating, but I’m repeating my mantra that ‘I am worthy’ and ‘I can do this’! It doesn’t hurt that Lilla is such an awesome teacher. She’s so creative and inspiring that you can’t help but want to show her your best work. Her teaching style is quirky, a little scattered, but loving and supportive. She is super positive and always encouraging. I’m enjoying the heck out of the class!
With that said, I wanted to post what I’ve got so far – a mood board/project proposal, a summary page, a table of contents, and a double page spread based on something from the table of contents. Here you go:
I’m still working out the color scheme. I think I need to warm it up a bit. Warmer colors sell better according to Lilla. But it’s not a bad start. At the end of class I’ll have something I can send to publishers to test the waters. That feels like a win even if I don’t get a book contract out of it. Experience is the best teacher.
Se ya next time – Liz
